An eye examination is not just checking whether you need glasses. At Sentra Clinic, Malad East, a comprehensive eye examination assesses the full health of your visual system — from spectacle power and corneal health at the front, to retinal and optic nerve health at the back. Conditions like glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration and early cataract are often detectable years before symptoms appear — making the annual eye exam one of the highest-yield health checks available.
Our examination is performed by Dr. Rohit Modi (FRCS Glasgow) or Dr. Shraddha Surekha — never delegated to a technician alone. You receive a thorough assessment, a clear explanation of findings, and a written report for your records.

Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) — how well you see with your best glasses or contact lenses. Manifest and cycloplegic refraction determines your true spectacle power, including sphere, cylinder and axis. Near vision assessment. Contrast sensitivity for patients with early retinal or optic nerve disease.
Examination of the eyelids, cornea, conjunctiva, anterior chamber, iris and lens under high magnification. Detects dry eye, corneal disease, anterior uveitis, cataract and many other anterior segment conditions. The slit lamp is the most important diagnostic instrument in the eye examination — and at Sentra, it is always used by the doctor, not just a technician.
Non-contact tonometry (air puff) as a screening test, followed by Goldmann applanation tonometry if indicated. Essential for glaucoma screening. Normal IOP is 10–21 mmHg; elevated pressure requires further glaucoma workup including visual fields and optic nerve OCT.
After pupil-dilating drops (takes 20–30 minutes to work), the retina, optic nerve, macula and blood vessels are examined directly. This is the most important part of the examination for patients over 40, diabetics, hypertensives, high myopes and family history of retinal disease. Cannot be skipped — undilated fundus examination misses significant retinal pathology.
High-resolution cross-sectional imaging of the retina and optic nerve. Detects early glaucomatous nerve fibre loss before visual field defects develop, macular degeneration, diabetic macular oedema, vitreomacular traction and other retinal conditions. Available in-house at Sentra — not sent to a separate imaging centre.
3D mapping of the corneal surface — essential for patients considering LASIK, patients with astigmatism, and screening for keratoconus. Available as part of the pre-LASIK workup and as an add-on to the standard examination for astigmatism patients or contact lens wearers.
"My GP had been monitoring my blood pressure but no one had checked my eyes. At my first Sentra examination, Dr. Modi found grade II hypertensive retinopathy — copper wiring and AV nipping. He wrote to my GP recommending tighter BP control. My cardiologist later said the retinal finding was the most sensitive early warning of my cardiovascular risk. A routine eye exam that may have saved my life."
— Ramesh Iyer, Malad West · Annual Eye Examination — Hypertensive Retinopathy Found"I came for a glasses check — I thought my power had changed. Dr. Shraddha found my power was stable but my OCT showed early macular changes. I had no symptoms whatsoever. She put me on AREDS2 supplements and a 6-monthly OCT monitoring schedule. I would never have known without this examination. This is why annual checks matter."
— Kavitha Rao, Kandivali West · Spectacle Check — Early AMD Found IncidentallyAn optician's eye test primarily determines your spectacle power. At Sentra Clinic, the examination is conducted by a medical doctor (FRCS Glasgow fellowship-trained) who evaluates the full health of your eyes — including retina, optic nerve, cornea, pressure, and anterior segment — with clinical-grade diagnostic equipment (OCT, slit-lamp, dilated fundoscopy). Conditions like glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration require the medical eye examination — an optician's test does not screen for these adequately.
Dilation is recommended and often essential for a complete retinal and optic nerve examination. An undilated examination misses significant peripheral and posterior retinal pathology. The dilation drops (tropicamide or cyclopentolate) cause blurred near vision and light sensitivity for 4–6 hours. Please arrange a cab rather than driving yourself. For patients with a history of narrow-angle glaucoma, Dr. Modi will assess the anterior chamber angle before dilating — your safety is always assessed first.
Diabetic patients should have a dilated fundus examination and OCT annually from the time of diabetes diagnosis — or more frequently if diabetic retinopathy is already present. The frequency increases to every 3–6 months for moderate non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy, and more frequently still if proliferative retinopathy or DMO is present. Do not wait for symptoms — diabetic retinopathy is asymptomatic until advanced stages.
Yes — emphatically. Glaucoma, early diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration and hypertensive retinopathy are all asymptomatic in their early, treatable stages. By the time you notice symptoms, significant and often irreversible damage has already occurred. The annual eye examination exists precisely to catch these conditions before symptoms develop. "I see fine" is not a substitute for "my eyes are healthy."
