Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS), as defined by the American Optometric Association, is a group of eye and vision problems that result from prolonged computer, tablet, e-reader and mobile phone use. The digital screen demands more from your visual system than reading print on paper — because screens have lower contrast, more glare, and unstable pixel refresh that forces your eye muscles and tear film to work harder and longer.
In Mumbai's corporate and student population, CVS is extremely common — surveys suggest 70–80% of regular screen users experience at least one symptom. The good news: it is highly treatable, and most patients find significant relief within 4–6 weeks of the right management plan.
Heavy, tired eyes — particularly noticeable in the afternoon after prolonged screen use. Often described as "my eyes feel like they weigh a kilo" by the end of the workday.
Screen use reduces your blink rate by 60–70%. Fewer blinks = faster tear evaporation = dry, stinging eyes. Paradoxically, this can cause reflex watering.
Frontal or orbital headache that worsens through the day. Often mistaken for migraine or sinusitis — but the pattern (better on weekends, worse on Mondays) is diagnostic.
Vision blurs when looking up from the screen, or difficulty focusing at distance after hours of near work. This is accommodative spasm — a temporary stiffening of the focusing muscle.
Intermittent doubling of text or objects — a sign that the eye muscles are fatiguing, or that a latent eye turn (phoria) is being decompensated by screen use.
Blue-light emission from screens suppresses melatonin. Difficulty sleeping, especially after evening screen use, is a recognised component of the CVS spectrum.

Even a small uncorrected refractive error (e.g., +0.50 hyperopia that is compensated unconsciously) dramatically worsens CVS. We check distance and near power precisely, including cycloplegic refraction where needed, and assess whether your current glasses are optimal for your screen distance.
Tear break-up time (TBUT), Schirmer's test, and meibomian gland assessment. Many CVS patients have underlying evaporative dry eye disease that is aggravated by screens. We treat the dry eye specifically, not just prescribe generic drops.
We test your focusing flexibility (accommodative amplitude and facility) and eye muscle balance (phoria/tropia). If your eyes don't work together smoothly at near, screen use will always be uncomfortable — and no amount of lubricating drops will fix that.
Screen distance, height, ambient lighting, monitor brightness, and the 20-20-20 rule (every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds). We review your actual work setup and give specific, practical changes — not generic advice from a poster.

Prolonged uncorrected CVS can worsen latent refractive errors, contribute to chronic dry eye disease, and in children, may affect visual development. Early treatment is always better than ignoring symptoms.
Blue-light glasses can help with sleep disruption from evening screen use, but they are not a complete treatment for CVS. If the root cause is dry eye, accommodative insufficiency, or an uncorrected refractive error — no tinted lens will fix those. A proper evaluation is essential.
Yes — the 20-20-20 rule (every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds) is evidence-based and genuinely helps reduce accommodative spasm and increase blink rate. Combined with the right spectacles, lubricants and dry eye treatment, most patients achieve very good symptom control without any surgery.
If the root cause of your CVS is an uncorrected refractive error — hyperopia, myopia or astigmatism — then LASIK or Contoura Vision can eliminate that root cause and dramatically reduce CVS symptoms. However, LASIK does affect tear film initially (usually for 3–6 months), so the timing and suitability must be evaluated carefully. Dr. Modi will advise you based on your individual workup.
