Types of Eye Allergy We Treat
Seasonal Allergic Conjunctivitis (SAC)
The most common form. Triggered by seasonal allergens — pollen, dust mites, mould spores. Symptoms worsen in certain seasons (Mumbai's pre-monsoon dust season and winter are common triggers). Usually bilateral — both eyes affected equally. Responds well to antihistamine drops and mast cell stabilisers.
Perennial Allergic Conjunctivitis (PAC)
Year-round symptoms from constant allergen exposure — house dust mites, pet dander, cockroach allergens. In Mumbai's high-density housing, PAC is very common. Management focuses on allergen avoidance combined with long-term low-dose anti-allergy drops.
Vernal Keratoconjunctivitis (VKC)
A severe, recurrent form of eye allergy predominantly affecting boys aged 5–25 in tropical climates like Mumbai. Giant papillae on the upper eyelid cause intense itching, photophobia and thick ropy discharge. VKC can affect the cornea and requires aggressive management with cyclosporin or tacrolimus drops in addition to antihistamines.
Contact Lens-Related Allergy (GPC)
Giant Papillary Conjunctivitis from prolonged contact lens use — particularly extended wear or inadequate cleaning. Contact lens intolerance, itching with lens wear and mucus discharge. Management involves a lens holiday, lens type change and anti-allergy therapy.
Drug-Induced Allergic Conjunctivitis
Allergy to eye drop preservatives (benzalkonium chloride) or to the active ingredient in drops — common with antibiotic or glaucoma drops used long-term. Symptoms: redness, itching and irritation worsening with each drop. Management: switch to preservative-free formulations.
Atopic Keratoconjunctivitis (AKC)
A severe, chronic ocular allergy associated with atopic dermatitis (eczema). Can cause corneal scarring and cataracts if inadequately controlled. Requires long-term management with immunomodulatory drops (cyclosporin) and sometimes systemic anti-allergy therapy.
Symptoms of Eye Allergy
- Intense itching — rubbing makes it worse (and can cause corneal damage in VKC)
- Redness — conjunctival injection (pink/red discolouration of the white of the eye)
- Watering — clear, watery discharge that is usually bilateral
- Swelling — puffiness of the eyelids and conjunctiva (chemosis)
- Burning or gritty sensation
- Thick ropy or stringy mucus discharge (particularly in VKC)
- Photophobia — light sensitivity (a sign of corneal involvement)
- Blurred vision (from excess tearing, mucus or corneal changes)
Treatment for Eye Allergy at Sentra Clinic
Antihistamine & Mast Cell Stabiliser Drops
First-line treatment for most forms of allergic conjunctivitis. Olopatadine, ketotifen and epinastine are commonly used. Mast cell stabilisers (sodium cromoglycate) are added for seasonal allergies when used preventively before the allergy season. We prescribe preservative-free versions for patients who need long-term use.
Steroid Eye Drops (Short Course)
For acute, severe attacks of allergic conjunctivitis with significant swelling or corneal involvement. Steroids must be used under a doctor's supervision — risks of raised eye pressure (steroid glaucoma) and cataract with unsupervised long-term use are significant. Sentra strictly monitors intraocular pressure in all patients on steroid drops.
Cyclosporin or Tacrolimus Drops
For VKC, AKC and steroid-dependent allergies. Immunomodulatory drops reduce the allergic inflammation without the pressure-raising risk of steroids. Can eye allergies damage my eyes permanently?
Most simple seasonal allergies don't cause permanent eye damage. However, severe VKC and AKC with corneal involvement can cause scarring and vision loss if inadequately treated. Repeated eye rubbing in allergy patients — especially children with VKC — is a major cause of keratoconus. Early, proper treatment prevents these complications.
Are antihistamine drops safe for children?
Yes — several antihistamine drops (olopatadine, ketotifen) are approved for children above 3 years. Short-course weak steroid drops under medical supervision are also used in children with severe allergy. Can I wear contact lenses if I have eye allergies?
With simple seasonal allergy, daily disposable lenses are generally tolerated better than monthly lenses. During acute allergy flares, it is best to avoid contact lenses and wear glasses. If you have GPC (contact lens-related allergy), a lens holiday and switch to a different lens material may allow you to return to lens wear after treatment.
What is the difference between eye allergy and eye infection?
Key distinguishing features: Allergy — itching is the dominant symptom, discharge is clear/watery, both eyes affected, no fever. Infection — pain or burning (not itching) dominates, discharge is yellow/green and thick, may start in one eye, sometimes with fever or sore throat. If you have yellow/green discharge and pain, come urgently — that may be infectious conjunctivitis that needs antibiotic treatment.
